February is a slow month, but it’s the perfect time to get in shape in preparation of the ~10 fitness events coming in March (see list at bottom). Here are your options:
- Do something healthy on Superbowl Sunday (@ ChiTown Big Game 5/10k)
- Mingle with half-naked singles over Valentine’s weekend (@ Cupid’s Undie Run)
- Run an entire race indoors (@ Warm Your Heart 5k)
- Drink from the tap at Three Floyds Brewery (@ Second Step Ride)
ChiTown Big Game 5/10k | Sun 2/2 | Soldier Field | Timed Race
For many Americans, Super Bowl Sunday is seen as an opportunity to eat a prodigious amount of snacks and pass out on the couch before the 4th quarter. In fact, we’ve seen reports that we’ll collectively consume 11 million pounds of chips and more than one billion chicken wings on this day alone.
Fortunately, the guys behind ChiTown Big Game are trying to change this. Their theory, or so it seems, is that a little running in the morning may help your metabolism survive the brutal beating it’s likely to get during the game.
ChiTown Big Game encompasses two races (5k & 10k) that begin outside of Soldier Field and head south along the lakefront, eventually looping back to the starting line. A Super Bowl tailgate will follow at United Club, a three-level indoor lounge on the East side of the stadium. Live music will be provided by One Night Band, who you may know from Wednesday nights at Duffy’s.
Registration is $48 for the 5k and $58 for the 10k, although a slight increase will take effect on January 27th. Both races are limited to 1,500 participants, each of whom will receive a technical running shirt and beanie. Check the site for packet pickup information. The 5k will kick off at 9:00AM and the 10k at 9:20AM. Inside tip: we’ve heard you can save 20% on registration using code SuperSunday.
Cupid’s Undie Run | Sat 2/15 | John Barleycorn Wrigleyville | Fun Run
Are you one of the 50 million Americans that hate pants? Cupid’s Undie Run is for you. In fact, it’s our favorite pantless-drinking-disguised-as-charity fitness event of the year. Here are the highlights:
- The “run” is only a mile(ish)
- Flexible dress code
- Starts and ends with two hours of partying (@ John Barleycorn)
- Good option for singles during Valentine’s weekend…
- Proceeds benefit The Children’s Tumor Foundation
In 2013, the event (across 30 cities) raised over $1.3 million to fight NF, which is pretty damn awesome. Individual registration is $40 (increasing to $50 on Feb 1st), although participants are asked to provide an additional donation. Team sign-ups are also available.
Our advice is to show up to Barleycorn around noon and accomplish two hours of (responsible) drinking before the run begins. Also, costumes are a must. Send us your pics after the race and we’ll post them to the site.
Warm Your Heart 5k | Sun 2/23 | McCormick Place | Timed Race
Warm Your Heart is the best fitness event for cold-haters this season, given that it’s entirely indoors. We don’t know how they managed a SINGLE-LOOP course, or how they got it certified by USATF, or how they’re going to accommodate 3,000 participants, but it helps that McCormick Place is the largest convention center in the country. Still, it’s impressive.
Individual entry is $57 and a Three Person Team Relay is available for $90 (note that online registration closes 2/19). The price includes a long-sleeve technical shirt. Packets will be available at Roadrunner Sports on Friday and Saturday before the event, or on race day starting at 7:15AM (at McCormick Place). The race kicks off at 9:00AM. Take public transportation to avoid the $19 parking fee.
Proceeds from this fitness event benefit Northwestern Medicine’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, which has one of the best cardiology programs in the nation.
Second Step Ride | Sat 2/22 | Wrigleyville | Social Ride
The Second Step Ride (organized by Bob Hsiung) is the CCC’s monthly attempt to visit Three Floyds brewery. The ride begins at 9am near the Clock Tower along Lakefront Trail (near Wrigleyville) and heads south. The goal is to make it to Three Floyds by noon. The total trip is 45 miles assuming you take the Metra back. Check the CCC site for information on how to RSVP to this fitness event.
